She is said to be the the daughter of Tlaloc or the older sister of the Tlalohqueh (rain gods). Her knowledge of salt is said to have developed due to a conflict between her and the Tlalohqueh. In one version, she insulted and mocked her brothers and so offended them that they banished her to the salt beds. There she discovered the existence of salt, how it was formed, and how to make salt jars. In another version, she gained control of sea water when her brothers tried to drown her in salt water for the insult.Huixtochihuatl is associated with salt, sea water and with rituals relating to water and fertility as well as urine, which is salty and impure. This feasting time occurred during the rainy season when the fields were beginning to ripen and were dedicated to the rain gods, Tlaloc and Chalchiuhtlicue, from the Nahuatl words chalchihuitl, "jade" and "cueitl", "skirt" meaning "Jade her skirt.." Also translated as, "She of the Jade Skirt" or "Lady Precious Skirt." Chalchiuhtlicue is Tlaloc's female counterpart. She is the lady of terrestrial waters, such as streams, rivers, springs, lakes, ground water, standing water and oceans. She served as the ruler and sun during the age of the Fourth Sun, Nahui Atl Tonatiuh (4 Water Sun). It is said she was very loving of the people, but Tezcatlipoca "Lord of Smoke and Mirrors" , jealous of her praise, accused her of faking her love towards people to gain their praises. Devastated by the accusation, Chalchiuhtlicue wept tears of blood for 52 years, drowning the world and turning humans into fish so they could survive.Chalchiuhtlicue is the patroness of navigation, protector of sick children, newborns, and childbirth.
